Steel wire ropes, which are usually used along with rigging equipment including shackle, eye hook, thimble, connecting link, turn buckle and more, are the most common lifting tool because of their high flexibility and strength. However, we must have in mind that in delicate lifting of goods usually with sharp and delicate edges webbing slings are also widely used.
Steel wires consist of 6 or more strands, ones that they themselves consist of narrow rods. Two numbers are usually used to define the structure of steel wire ropes. The former defines the number of strands and the latter defines the number of rods in each strand. Aside from these two numbers, two more specifications are usually used for steel wire ropes, one that defines the core and the other defines the weaving.
Steel wire rope can consist of fiber and metal core. Steel wire ropes with fiber core are tagged with FC which stands for fiber core and the ones with metal core which in fact is a narrow steel wire rope itself are tagged as IWRC.
